Drones will help UH Hilo study wiliwili trees
Unmanned aircraft will help researchers study a struggling Hawaiian tree species. The University of Hawaii at Hilo says the Federal Aviation Administration is authorizing the use of drones to assess wiliwili trees on the Big Island.

State lawmakers grapple with drone issues
Police, hobbyists, filmmakers and regulators told lawmakers Tuesday that the state should protect people’s privacy. But they urged lawmakers not to curtail the many uses for unmanned aircraft beyond police surveillance, including commercial photography, search and rescue operations, resource management and recreational use.
Enthusiasts want lawmakers to exempt hobbyists from a bill that would restrict drone use to law enforcement agencies. “Flying model aircraft is nothing new. The reason why it is gaining popularity today is that its price point dropped and more people who can now afford it,” said Eric Ryan. Ryan also fears what the restrictions will do for those eyeing it for commercial use.

The Senate Judiciary Committee today broadened a bill to regulate remote controlled aerial vehicles, commonly called drones. Senate Bill 2608 originally sought to restrict the use of the machines to law enforcement only. But it was amended to include other uses.
